Measles is a viral infection that is characterized by the appearance of a rash throughout the body and is very contagious.

Measles can be very annoying and leads to more serious complications. Symptoms of measles begin to appear around one to two weeks after the virus enters the body.

These symptoms include:

1. Red eyes.

2. The eyes become sensitive to light.

3. Signs such as runny nose (Eg sore throat, runny nose, or stuffy nose).

4. Fever.

Red brown spots or rashes will appear on the skin after a few days later. The order in which these spots appear from behind the ear, around the head, then to the neck. In the end the rash will spread throughout the body.

In addition, sufferers also have the potential to experience swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck.

The diagnosis of measles can be done by looking at the symptoms that appear. But to ensure a diagnosis of measles, saliva and blood samples are taken for the test.

Measles virus and its spread

For people with measles, the measles virus is in the splash of liquid released when they sneeze and cough. The measles virus will infect anyone who breathes this spark.

The measles virus can remain on the surface for several hours and can survive sticking to other objects.

When we touch an object that has been hit by a measles virus and then attaches the hand to the nose or mouth, we can become infected.

Measles is more common in infants. but basically everyone can be infected with this virus, especially those who have never been exposed to measles or who have not received measles vaccination.

Measles and Prevention

MMR vaccination is a combined vaccine for measles, mumps and German measles.

MMR vaccination is given twice. first given when children are 13 months old, then the next is given when they are 5-6 years old or before entering elementary school.

Measles and its treatment

The human immune system will naturally fight this viral infection. But if complications occur or measles infection becomes very severe, hospital care is likely to be needed.

To speed up the recovery process, there are several things that can help, namely:

1. Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.

2. Lots of rest and avoid sunlight as long as the eyes are still sensitive to light.

3. Take fever-lowering medication and pain reliever. Don't give aspirin if your child is less than 16 years old.
